An announcement today from the City of Everett Mayor’s Office regarding the retirement of Judge Laura Van Slyck from the municipal court and a call for applications of those interested in filling out her term.

Laura Van Slyck

Laura Van Slyck was elected in November 2013 as Everett’s first female judge.

Judge Laura Van Slyck has announced her retirement from Everett Municipal Court, effective June 30, 2022. Mayor Cassie Franklin now seeks interested and qualified members of the Washington State Bar Association to submit applications to fill Judge Van Slyck’s position.

“Judge Van Slyck has been an excellent lawyer as a prosecutor and excellent judge, known for her fairness and professionalism,” said Mayor Franklin. “She was universally respected by prosecutors and defense attorneys. We wish her well in her retirement!”

The Everett Municipal Court has two full-time municipal judges. Van Slyck was first elected to the Everett Municipal Court bench (Position 2) in November 2013. Before becoming a judge, Van Slyck was an assistant city attorney primarily focused on criminal prosecution, police legal advising and public safety.

“I have worked in Everett my entire professional career,” Van Slyck said. “My family and I have enjoyed being members of this community and it has been a tremendous honor to serve as both a judicial officer and assistant city attorney.”

Mayor Franklin seeks candidates to serve in an interim appointment until the vacant position can be filled in the November 2023 election. The mayor’s interim appointment is subject to confirmation by the city council. To be considered for an interim appointment a candidate must meet the requirements of Everett Municipal Code (EMC) 2.108.080.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, resume and a list of references to the Mayor’s Office by April 20, 2022, at 2930 Wetmore Ave. Ste. 10-A, Everett, WA 98201.
