Given that the city of Everett, Washington is surrounded by water on three sides, Marine Resources are kind of a big deal. Last week Snohomish County put out the call for people interested in serving as members of the Marine Resources Committee. Here’s more on what is required and how to apply.

The Marine Resources Committee (MRC), a service provided by Snohomish County Surface Water Management, is focused on protecting, and restoring the marine and estuarine environment of the county. The committee is seeking up to four new members motivated and eager to learn about marine conservation, participate in science-based research, and contribute to policy recommendations on marine issues as a part of the MRC.
Those selected to serve on the MRC will help recommend actions to the Snohomish County Executive and the County Council during a three-year term running 2021 through 2023, with the possibility of two additional terms.
The MRC is involved in creating and piloting marine ecology research projects and tools such as the recent Snohomish Estuary Creosote Piling Prioritization Plan and removal of derelict vessels. The committee also helps with community education, such as annual recreational crabber education to reduce the loss of crab pots in Port Susan.
Appointed committee members’ involvement and responsibilities include attending monthly meetings and volunteering for a minimum of 10 hours a month. MRC meetings are now virtual on the third Wednesday of every month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Members will participate in MRC project planning and implementation, including field work. All field work is being done under COVID-19 safety guidelines developed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Snohomish County Health District, including social distancing of six feet, wearing masks and routinely cleaning high touch surfaces.
The MRC currently has 12 members, they represent a balance of scientists, local and tribal governments’ staff and recreational, economic, and environmental interests. In addition to these interests, the committee seeks members with diverse backgrounds in areas such as commercial fishing, marinas, railroads, or housing development.
