More than a year ago the City of Everett agreed to create a new park at the south side of the new YMCA building on Colby Avenue. At the time there was quite a discussion over what to name the Park with the Everett Historical Commission proposing naming the park after Doctor Arthur S. Grossman, a family practice doctor and obstetrician who practiced in Everett for decades. That process stopped after other names were argued and the City Council eventually call a time-out on the naming.

Now that the new YMCA is up and running what to name the park is coming up in community discussions. Everett resident Deb Fox, has started an online petition to name the park after Emma Yule: Everett’s first teacher, first principal, and first female superintendent. She came to Everett from Iowa and began teaching in December of 1891.

The naming of the new park is set to take place sometime after the first of the year and it is likely going to be a lively discussion. Don’t be surprised to see more petitions with other names start popping up as naming a new Park is not an opportunity that happens very often in Everett, Washington.
