The Snohomish County Medical Examiner has identified the man as Colin A.C. Wehmeyer of Lake Stevens, WA. The cause and manner of death are pending further investigation.

The Everett Police sergeant who deployed his Taser during Thursday’s incident has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard in these types of investigations. 9:40 PM Editor’s Update from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office:

Detectives with the Snohomish Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) are investigating a use-of-force incident at the 3200 block of Broadway Ave. A 39 year-old Lake Stevens man is in critical condition at Providence Regional Medical Center following an altercation with Everett Police around 5 p.m. today.

Earlier this month, the Lake Stevens Police Department had established probable cause on the suspect for unlawful possession of firearms. Today, they served a search warrant on the suspect’s residence at the 10320 block of Oak Road in Lake Stevens while the suspect was at an appointment in Everett around 4:30 p.m. During the search, Lake Stevens police had reason to believe the suspect was armed. A detective from Lake Stevens PD was surveilling the suspect and had notified Everett PD of the suspect’s location and that he could be armed and dangerous. The suspect eventually left his appointment and started walking northbound on Broadway Ave. He was contacted by officers with Everett PD and an altercation ensued . An Everett PD sergeant deployed his Taser twice. The suspect began running away from the officers northbound on Broadway Ave and collapsed. Everett PD immediately requested aid units and began to administer life saving measures. The suspect was transported by Everett Fire Department to PRMC. Four Everett Police officers and one sergeant were involved in the incident. Two firearms were recovered from the suspect.

The investigation is being conducted by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART), a team of detectives from various Snohomish County law enforcement agencies who respond to, and investigate, police use of force incidents. When the SMART investigation is complete, results will be forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
