Editor’s Update 7:00 PM: Word in from investigators that two deputies were involved in the altercation that led to a shooting south of Everett Saturday night.

Detectives with the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) continue to investigate a deputy involved shooting of a 44-year-old man that occurred at approximately 8:00pm on Saturday, November 9 in South Everett.

A family member of the 44-year-old Everett man called 911 at approximately 7:45pm stating the man was suicidal, had already harmed himself with a knife, and requested the assistance of the Snohomish County Sheriff. SMART detectives have recovered a knife from the scene and are investigating the sequence of events that lead to the deputy involved shooting.

Two Snohomish County Deputies have been placed on administrative leave. The deputy that deployed the less lethal pepper ball gun has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2014 and has a total of seven years of law enforcement experience. The deputy that fired their department issued firearm has been with the Sheriff’s Office since July of 2019 and has a total of four years of law enforcement experience.

The SMART Team will continue to provide updates as the investigation continues.

Original Post 11/10/19 4:30 AM: The Snohomish Multi Agency Response Team is investigating after a Snohomish County Sheriff’s Deputy used deadly force in an incident Saturday night at The Stinson apartment complex on 124th street SW. Here’s the explanation from Julie Moore, PIO for the S.M.A.R.T. team.

Detectives with the Snohomish Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) are investigating an deputy involved shooting of a 44-year-old man that occurred at approximately 8:00pm on Saturday, November 9 in unincorporated South Everett.

Snohomish County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a suicidal subject at an apartment complex in the 100 block of 124th St SE. Deputies were advised the man had a knife and had already stabbed himself. When deputies arrived, they attempted to make contact with the man and he began to advance on them. Initially the man was struck with less lethal rounds. The man continued to advance, and shots were fired.

Deputies immediately rendered aid to the male, and shortly after medics from South Snohomish County Fire transported him to Providence Regional Medial Center where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner will release the identity of the individual and determine cause and manner of death. The investigation is being conducted by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART), a team of detectives from various Snohomish County law enforcement agencies who respond to, and investigate, police use of force incidents.

When the SMART investigation is complete, results will be forwarded to the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
