Good news out today from Washington State DOT for those who come into Everett on the westbound Hewitt Avenue Trestle.

Crews were able to complete the major work on the Westbound Trestle.

Done; four letters, one word. Washington State Department of Transportation contractor crews are done, ahead of schedule, with major weekend closures for the westbound portion of the US 2 paving project in Snohomish County.

The fifth, and final weekend directional closure for this critical rehabilitation effort wrapped up just after midnight Aug. 5. The pavement preservation and structure repairs crews made will keep commuters and commerce moving on westbound US 2 for years to come.

“Lakeside worked very hard to finish early and save travelers from a sixth weekend of backups and detours,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Mark Sawyer. “Closing an entire direction of a highway is never convenient, and we appreciate the people of Snohomish County for their patience.”

During the five weekend closures, crews:

Repaved three miles of westbound US 2 – including the Hewitt Avenue trestle – with more than 1,000 tons of asphalt.
Installed enough waterproof matting to cover more than eight football fields.
Made repairs to the trestle structure to cut down the need for future emergency repairs.
Crews also repaved one mile of eastbound US 2 between the State Route 204 interchange and Bickford Avenue during overnight closures last year. This $11.6 million project extends the life of the highway while also creating a safer driving surface for the 41,000 vehicles that travel both directions of the road every day.

Finishing touches

Crews will need a handful of overnight lane reductions on westbound US 2 during the coming weeks to finish expansion joint repairs and place new permanent striping. Travelers can check the Snohomish County Construction page or sign up for email updates to find out when those lane reductions will happen.

More improvements underway on US 2

Since 2008, WSDOT has invested more than $60 million dollars to improve US 2 between Everett and Stevens Pass. Right now, an $18.9 million preservation and safety project is happening between Bickford Avenue near Snohomish and Gold Bar. New pavement, wider medians and repaired and replaced expansion joints will keep the highway in good condition and able to support future population growth.

Farther east, a resurfacing project on US 2 near Index and Skykomish is in its final phase. Travelers can expect lengthy backups and delays of up to 45 minutes during weekday construction.
