Two Citizens To Receive Life-Saving Award

There will be a special presentation at the Everett City Council meeting tomorrow night.

On Wednesday, June 19, Everett Fire Chief Dave DeMarco will present the Citizen Lifesaving Award to two community members who helped save a man’s life by administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after the person collapsed during a soccer game at Kasch Park. The Citizen Lifesaving Award is given to those outside of the fire department who have been involved in a life-saving effort at an emergency scene prior to fire/rescue’s arrival.

On Sunday, May 5, 2019, Julie Plitnik and Jenny Garcia were playing in a soccer game at Kasch Park, 8811 Airport Rd., when a fellow player, Lowell Zenk, experienced a sudden cardiac arrest. Plitnik and Garcia both provided CPR to the patient, rotating every two minutes until Everett Fire Department’s Medic 6 and Engine 6 relieved them. After treatment by Everett Fire, Mr. Zenk was resuscitated and speaking by the time he was ready for transport.

“The quick actions by these bystanders had a direct impact on the end result by giving us a chance to save a life,” said Chief DeMarco. “Time is critical during a medical emergency and having by-standers get involved can make a huge difference in the outcome. That is why we encourage everyone to learn the life-saving skills of CPR and AED application.”

Julie Plitnik and Jenny Garcia, as well as the man whose life they helped save, Lowell Zenk, will be present at the Everett City Council meeting for the award ceremony on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 3002 Wetmore Ave.
