In Everett, Washington last night (Thursday) more than a hundred people gathered in front of the little mini mart at the corner of Columbia street and Broadway. Flowers and cards surrounded the gas pumps and lined the front of the store. Stories of kindness, compassion and love were shared. All to honor Jae An, who owned the “mom and pop” market with his wife, Hyang Boon An.

On Monday night Mr. An was brutally murdered and robbed. When the suspect couldn’t get the till open he reportedly took Mr An’s wallet, keys and money. He is in custody in the Snohomish County Jail awaiting charges of aggravated murder.

Mr. An leaves behind a wife and adult son. A “Go Fund Me” page has been started to raise money for funeral and memorial costs.

Friends say Jae An was a first generation American who moved from South Korea to provide his family with a better life and live the American dream. Here are a few comments about Mr. An.

“Jae worked hard every day of his life and did all he could to help his family and neighbors. He was known throughout his community as a helpful, compassionate and caring man.”

“They are truly a part of our community. My family and I have been going there for years as we live around the corner. They were the sweetest couple. Jay and his wife were good people. My son (15) goes there almost daily… a few times my son was short change they would allow him to pay next time. They always asked how we were doing. My heart aches for his family.”

“This is the most heartbreaking thing ever. Truly horrific. Jay and his wife are the kindest strangers you could ever meet.”

“I bought beer and a candy bar from Jae (or his wife) every week and they always remembered me but most importantly Jae was part of my neighborhood and was a kind and hardworking man. I appreciated him and his family very much and am devastated by his loss.”

Again here is the link if you would like to contribute to the funeral and memorial expenses.
