Parks in Everett, Washington may close when the sun goes down.

Instead of closing at a specific time, the Everett Parks Department is asking the Everett City Council to change closing times at the city’s parks to dusk.

Currently parks in Everett are open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM April 1st to October 31st and 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM November 1st – March 31st.

The new hours would be 6:00 AM – Dusk with dusk defined as 30 minutes after sunset.

Scheduled events would not be affected and the parks and recreation director will have the authority to modify the times a park is open or closed.

The idea behind the new hours is to increase safety for park users and staff. It should also increase availability of park rangers to be at the park in daylight hours when they can be most effective in helping people using the parks.

Snohomish County and nearby cities including Mukilteo, Lynnwood and Snohomish all have their park hours ending at dusk.

A public hearing and city council vote on the matter is schedule for Wednesday October 24th.
