Jamyang Nhangkar to fill Position 1 on Board of Directors

On Sept. 12, the Everett Public Schools Board of Directors interviewed five candidates for appointment to board Position 1 which was vacated in June:

Richard Hazzard
Jamyang Nhangkar
D. Mason Rutledge
Emily Wicks

The interview process began at 3 p.m. and concluded at 7 p.m. when the board went into Executive Session to review the candidates’ qualifications. Returning to open session at approximately 9:05 p.m., the board voted to appoint Jamyang Nhangkar to Position 1. Mr. Nhangkar will serve as a member of the Board of Directors until that term ends in 2019. At that time, he may choose whether to run for election to serve another term.

It was a difficult decision for the board as there were many qualified candidates. The applicants were screened through written applications and interviews for comparative qualifications, experience and potential fit. They had competing strengths and many qualifications which contributed to the difficulty of the board’s decision.

“The breadth and depth of the applicants’ qualifications made this a very difficult decision,” said Caroline Mason, board president. “I am thankful for the director’s time and commitment to the selections process. We look forward to returning to a full board as the new school year begins.”

“We are grateful for everyone who stepped up and participated in the process. We appreciate seeing so many outstanding citizens committed to the work of the district,” said Gary Cohn, district superintendent.

Mr. Nhangkar works as a public affairs specialist at Community Transit, managing the agency’s relationships with local organizations, chambers of commerce, government agencies and other community groups. Previously he was employed with the Economic Alliance of Snohomish County and the Puget Sound Business Journal. He serves on the board of the Lynnwood Chamber of Commerce and is a former president and current board member of the Tibetan Association of Washington. His two children are students in Everett Public Schools.

“Teachers have one of the most noble of professions, that of educating the young minds of our children,” stated Mr. Nhangkar. “To be able to support the important work they do is an honor and a privilege.”

Nhangkar will be administered the oath of office at the next board meeting on Sept. 25. The meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Community Resource Center Board Room at 3900 Broadway in Everett.
