Everett Silvertips Beat Seattle – Advance To Playoff Round 2

More playoff hockey in Everett next weekend as the Everett Silvertips advance to round two of the WHL playoffs following a Saturday night shut out over the Seattle Thunderbirds. Here’s what you need to know…

The Everett Silvertips eliminated the Seattle Thunderbirds in a 4-1 series victory, winning Game 5, 4-0 before 6,179 fans at Angel of the Winds Arena in downtown Everett on Saturday in WHL Playoff action.

The Silvertips have advanced to the second round for the fourth straight season, knocking out their U.S. Division rivals by outscoring the Thunderbirds, 11-3 in the final two games.

Carter Hart had his third career playoff shutout with 36 saves. Connor Dewar had his second consecutive three point game and Riley Sutter earned the game winning goal.

The win also closed the WHL careers for Seattle’s overage players: defensemen Turner Ottenbreit and Austin Strand, and forward Nolan Volcan.

The Silvertips will open the second round of the WHL Playoffs with home ice advantage, with the following home dates confirmed:

GAME 1: Friday, April 6 / 7:35 p.m. – Angel of the Winds Arena
GAME 2: Saturday, April 7 / 7:05 p.m. – Angel of the Winds Arena

The first period saw an extremely disciplined and hard fought effort by the Silvertips. They focused on playing a 200 foot game and saw a lot of great chances. Both Liam Hughes and Carter Hart were excellent throughout the first but Everett came out on top as Riley Sutter went top shelf on Hughes at 5:46 thanks to hard work from Connor Dewar and Garrett Pilon to make it 1-0 Tips.

The second period saw the continued momentum of the first period as Everett continued to put on pressure and got a lot of offensive zone opportunities throughout. Carter Hart had his fair share of work as well and continued to be perfect throughout as he stopped all 14 shots that he faced in the second. The insurance goal was a nice blast by Ondrej Vala at the blue line through a screen to make it 2-0 Tips with lots of credit to Pilon and Davis for setting up the play. At 15:53, Mathew Wedman was called for roughing against Patrick Bajkov, giving Everett their lone power play of the game. Bajkov made Seattle pay for the power play as the first shift with special teams out, he got his fourth of the series to make it 3-0 Tips with Dewar and Fonteyne getting the assists. Liam Hughes faced 17 shots in the third.

The final 20 minutes of the third saw great opportunities for both teams but Hart and Hughes did an excellent job keeping pucks out of the net. Hart made huge saves to get his series winning shutout victory. With 2:45 left, Seattle pulled Hughes for their last attempt at a comeback and Dewar got an empty net goal, sealing the deal for the Tips at 17:29 making it 4-0 Tips.
