One of the main suspects in the case was Karey Hinkson. At trial in January she was convicted by a jury on three of five counts but failed to return to the courtroom and fled the area. On February 2nd she was located by Everett Police and U.S. Secret Service agents in Pierce County and returned to Snohomish County to face sentencing.
Last Friday (March 2nd) she was sentenced to seven years in prison. Other suspects involved received lesser sentences on a variety of charges.
Many victims are still trying to get their financial affairs in order as a result of the action of this group. Everett Police Detective Jamie French worked this case and offered the following reminder on how the public can take steps to protect their identity. “Don’t leave anything valuable in your vehicle, even if it’s only for a few minutes,” warns French. “Get a locking mailbox, or better yet, get a P.O. Box and check your bank accounts and credit history on a regular basis as these simple things could save you hours of work and heartache later on.”
Hinkson’s defense asked the court for a Drug Offender Sentencing Alternative where she would receive a reduced prison sentence in exchange for completing substance abuse treatment. Those sentenced under DOSA serve a period of time in prison followed by a term of community supervision. The judge denied that request and handed down a sentence of seven years.
