The Everett City Council will appoint a new member to a temporary vacancy.

The Everett City Council is seeking applications from residents interested in interim council position No. 4. The appointee will fill the seat currently held by Cassie Franklin, who was elected as Mayor earlier this month.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a resident of the city with at least one-year residency and registered to vote. Interested residents should submit their application, including a resume and cover letter, no later than 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, to the Everett City Council offices, 2930 Wetmore Avenue, Suite 9A, Everett, WA 98201. Applications can also be submitted via the City’s website.

Following the application period, council members will review the applications independently. Applicant information will be posted to the City’s website. Community members who wish to provide comments are asked to do so via email to council@everettwa.gov before Dec. 11 to allow all council members an opportunity to review comments before the Dec. 13 meeting.

At the Dec. 13 council meeting, all applicants who submitted their materials by the deadline will be given five minutes to introduce themselves and provide a brief statement describing their interest in the position. If there are more than six applicants, the council may take a brief recess to discuss the candidates’ qualifications. Each council member will nominate his or her top two choices to move forward in the process, with a maximum of six candidates moving forward.

Council members will interview the finalists at a special meeting from 3 to 6 p.m. prior to the regular council meeting on Dec. 20. The public is invited to attend this open public meeting in the council chambers located at 3002 Wetmore Avenue. Community members wishing to comment on the six finalists are asked to send comments via email to council@everettwa.gov no later than Dec. 18.

Following council deliberation, the council president will ask each member to submit, in writing, the name of their preferred candidate. If there are more than two nominees, council will vote to identify the top two candidates. Council will then vote on the appointee to fill the interim position until the next general election.

The successful candidate will be sworn in at the beginning of the Jan. 3, 2018 council meeting and will serve until the November 2018 general election is certified.

To apply, please fill out the City of Everett Interim Council Member Application. For more information, contact the City Council office at 425-257-8703. Please note all information provided is subject to the open public meetings act and is available to the public.
