Sheriff Trenary asked the County Council today to support an ordinance that bans safe injection sites in Snohomish County.

“The opioid crisis is the worst I’ve seen in 30+ years of law enforcement,” he said. “Creating a site for people to inject heroin is going in the wrong direction.”

In order to effectively start tackling the problem today, said the sheriff, there is a critical need for better access to addiction treatment and prevention services in Snohomish County. The Council voted unanimously to impose a six month-moratorium on the creation of injection sites and will revisit the issue in December.

This action only applies to unincorporated Snohomish County. No word yet from Everett if the city will follow suit.
