An investigator with the S.M.A.R.T. team enters the Snohomish County Jail at 5:30 AM

The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team or S.M.A.R.T. is investigating the death of a man brought into the Snohomish County Jail by Everett Police early this morning. Here’s what MyEverettNews.com has been able to learn so far.

Just before 2 AM an Everett Police Officer was called to the 7-11 store in the 10100 block of Evergreen Way for a complaint. Shortly after the officer’s arrival the officer radioed he was fighting with one person. Other officers responded and the man was taken into custody.

At that time an Everett Police Sgt asked for an aid car. Aid responded and then left the scene and the man was taken by Everett Police to the Snohomish County Jail. Just before 3:00 AM there was a medic call to the jail and crews worked on the man including performing CPR for approximately 40 minutes. The man apparently died at the jail.

The S.M.A.R.T. team is now investigating the death. Here is their official press release…

An investigation is being conducted in response to an in-custody death at the Snohomish County Jail early this morning. A 35-year old Everett-area male was arrested by Everett Police and transported to the Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of attempted vehicle prowl first degree and obstruction. During the arrest the individual struggled with arresting officers.

Once at the Snohomish County Jail, the individual remained resistive and uncooperative. Jail medical staff was present during attempts to de-escalate the individual and monitor vital signs. Jail staff deployed a Taser to gain compliance. The individual continued to resist staff and was placed in a restraint chair. At that time, the male became non-responsive and life-saving measures were initiated. 911 was called. Everett Fire Department performed life-saving measures and pronounced the male deceased.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner will take custody of the body to determine cause and manner of death and confirm identity.

The investigation is being conducted by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team, a team of detectives from various Snohomish County law enforcement agencies who respond to and investigate police use of force incidents.
