Everett Parks and Recreation staff announced today that access to Howarth Park beach has reopened following the completion of repairs to the Howarth Park pedestrian bridge. BNSF Inspectors approved the work this morning and allowed the bridge to reopen.

“We are truly excited to share this news, as I know that many neighbors and community members have been looking forward to using the bridge and enjoying Howarth Park beach once again,” said Lori Cummings, parks and recreation director. “The reopening comes just in time to allow people to enjoy the area over Labor Day weekend.”

Forma Construction began the repairs on July 25 and work progressed without any complications. During the over-track work, crews replaced perforated steel joists and supports, which support the walkway across the tracks. A new walkway surface and protective fencing were installed on both sides of the bridge, as well as above. The bridge and beach access have been closed since May 2015, when a routine inspection uncovered significant rust causing extensive deterioration on the bridge’s beams that support the walking surface. The City immediately closed the bridge and contracted the design of repairs. BNSF approved the design in December 2015 and the repair project was awarded to Forma Construction in February 2016.
