Sno. Co. Squeeze

An up-close look at concrete chipping in an expansion joint.

We got a break last weekend and will get a break Memorial Day weekend but tomorrow through Sunday you may want to check out the Fisherman’s Village Music Festival or other activities in Everett as the Sno. Co. Squeeze returns. Here’s what you need to know courtesy of Washington State DOT…

#SnoCoSqueeze: Two narrow lanes for northbound I-5 drivers this weekend May 20 – 23
MARYSVILLE – Northbound Interstate 5 near Marysville will be reduced to two narrow lanes this weekend as the #SnoCoSqueeze expansion joint repair work resumes on the Steamboat Slough and Ebey Slough bridges. The State Route 529 on-ramp to northbound I-5 will also be closed during the weekend work, which runs Friday night, May 20, to Monday morning, May 23.

“We have seen backups on I-5 of more than 5 miles during the weekend lane reductions,” said Washington State Department of Transportation traffic engineer Mike Swires. “Drivers should also be prepared for longer drive times on SR 529 and SR 9 as well as the city streets of Marysville and Everett”

Lane reduction details

  • Northbound I-5 will be reduced to one lane Friday night, May 20 and again Sunday night, May 22.
  • Two narrow lanes will be open Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22.
  • The SR 529 on-ramp to northbound I-5 will be closed.
  • All lanes will be open at 5 a.m. Monday morning, May 23.

Tools to plan your weekend commute strategies

  • A Snohomish County area traffic map is available online with real time traffic cameras and travel times.
  • Weekend travel updates will be available on WSDOT’s Facebook page.
  • WSDOT’s mobile app offers information for travelers on the go.
  • @wsdot_traffic will provide updates about this project using the hashtag #SnoCoSqueeze.

Crews take a break Memorial Day weekend
WSDOT contractor crews will not work Memorial Day weekend, leaving three lanes open on northbound I-5 as well as the auxiliary lane from the SR 529 on-ramp to the SR 528 off-ramp.

Project information

WSDOT contractor crews are replacing a total of 41 aging expansion joints throughout the course of the project. The weekend work gives crews the space and time they need to complete the work.

Due to the size of the joints, they need to be replaced during weekends to allow enough time to chip out the old concrete, remove the existing joints, install the new ones, pour new concrete and let it cure.
