Everett is looking at updating its anti-harassment laws to include “revenge porn”

Revenge Porn, where a person takes intimate photos of a former lover and puts them on the internet, is a growing problem. This week the Everett City Council will get a first look at a proposed ordinance to address the issue of someone disclosing intimate images of another.

In addition to addressing the person who places those images on the internet, the ordinance would also amend the city’s cyberstalking and telephone harassment law to include any person who knowingly permits any device under their control to be used to upload revenge porn.

Violation of the proposed law would be a gross misdemeanor punishable by up to 364 days in jail or a $5,000.00 fine.

The new law would also give City of Everett judges the ability to issue protection orders that would prohibit people suspected of revenge porn from contacting the victim.

This week’s briefing will happen at the daytime Everett City Council meeting Wednesday at 12:30 PM in the city council chambers at 3002 Wetmore Ave. in downtown Everett. There will be a public hearing and vote on the ordinance on May 11th.
