The Sheriff’s Office says gang colors a factor in shooting.
Details into the shooting last night around 6:30 p.m. of two teens at a play field near Discovery Elementary have emerged following the arrest of the 17 year-old suspect. The suspect admitted to detectives he was dressed in red last night to represent his gang affiliation. The suspect said he confronted the male victim about wearing blue shorts (the color of the suspect’s rival gang) and the fact that the victim was Hispanic. Neither victim nor the juvenile female who accompanied them (who was not injured) have any association to a gang, nor did they know the suspect prior to last night’s incident. When the male victim would not respond to the suspect’s accusations of “repping blue” (a gang term), the suspect shot the 17 year-old male with a pistol. The male victim’s 14 year-old sister began yelling at the suspect and the suspect then shot her.
A custodian from Discovery Elementary was the first on the scene after the suspect and three other females fled the play field. He rendered aid to the victims until fire units arrived.
The suspect has been booked into the juvenile corrections facility on two charges of 1st degree assault with a firearm. The firearm believed to be used in last night’s assault, a Ruger .22, was recovered from the residence where the suspect was located. It is confirmed to have been stolen in a case investigated by Everett Police Department.
