Friday is graduation day for two dozen Middle and High School students who’ve been participating in the annual Everett Junior Police Academy this week. The yearly program gives kids hands on experience into what police officers do every day. Just like the regular police academy these students have physical fitness programs, field drills, classroom work and a lot of hands on training. “We want to immerse them in a different view of what police officers do,” said Everett Police officer Aaron Snell. “It breaks down barriers and leads to greater understanding.”

The academy is part of a national program that has been tailored for use in this area. Classes are taught by School Resource Officers from the Everett Police Department as well as the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office along with expert guest instructors on everything from helicopter operations to K-9 tracking and investigations.

While MyEverettNews.com was there we watched as the cadets participated in crime scene investigation. There were separate stations that dealt with collecting evidence at a homicide scene and taking notes of what was found. Using fingerprinting tools to collect prints and an exercise that involved interviewing witnesses.

The students are made up primarily from the Everett and Mukilteo school districts and have to be nominated to participate and then go through an application process prior to being accepted. This is the 8th year for the program in Everett.
