This morning more than 520 kids started a week of intensive soccer training along with a couple of good meals and some life lessons. The Annual Casino Road Futbol Academy runs through Friday at Walter Hall Park on Casino Road in south Everett.

MyEverettNews.com had a moment to catch up with Everett Police Sgt. Manny Garcia who came up with the idea for the camp a number of years ago and has been a driving force behind it. He said they’ve increased the number of volunteer coaches to provide a higher level of instruction for the kids this year. He also told us he’s happy for the way the academy has evolved over the years and is thankful for the volunteers and sponsors that make it happen.

In addition to soccer, kids also interact with police officers, learn various life lessons and have a chance to mix with a very diverse population that organizers hope will help them both on and off the field. Here are some photos from opening day. Click to enlarge.
