District to serve students free lunch on May 22 during teacher walkout
Classes are canceled, but lunches are free at three schools from 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.
During the teacher walkout on Friday, May 22, Emerson, Hawthorne, and Woodside elementary schools will open cafeteria doors to students who depend on schools for midday meals.
From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at those three school cafeterias, students have a sack lunch choice of a cold lunch entrée with fruit, veggie and milk.
Everett Public Schools and other county school districts routinely serve breakfast and lunches to students in the summer as part of a federal summer food program. “We know many of our families depend upon our summer food program, and we anticipate they will also be relying on us for meals when schools are closed on May 22,” noted Superintendent Gary Cohn. “Our food and nutrition department responded very quickly to news of the closure, and I’m pleased that we can offer lunch to families whose children need food.”
