A silent march to honor a girl who committed suicide last Thursday turned loud this afternoon at Evergreen Middle School in south Everett. According to Mary Waggoner, spokesperson for the Everett School District a planned event to honor the girl was held around 11:30 this morning on the campus of Evergreen Middle with students silently walking around the buildings. At the end of that event, adults arrived on campus and released balloons in the girl’s memory. That event then turned into what one of the adults involved told MyEverettNews.com was a planned walk out. Over a hundred students walked out of the Beverly Lane side of the school chanting the girl’s name over and over. Many carried signs in memory of the girl, signs against bullying and also signs advising support and help for those who may be thinking of suicide. The students did a couple of laps around Evergreen stopping on the 79th street side where the girl’s father and other adults addressed the media. Everett Police and school staff watched the proceedings and worked on getting the kids back to class.

Waggoner says the school staff at Evergreen and other schools in the district work hard to identify and help students who may be having issues and offer support to both students and their families. She says Everett Schools offer resources to students who may feel bullied or harassed and make it as easy as they can to report such concerns. Students who participated in today’s march and returned to campus are not likely to face any disciplinary action. “We want the students to know they’ve been heard,” said Waggoner. “This is a tough situation and sad day for students and staffers alike.” Extra counselors were on-hand today at Evergreen to support students and staff.
