A captain and battalion chief discuss the kitchen fire.

It didn’t take long for Everett Firefighters to knock down a kitchen fire on Hollow Dale Place late this morning. Assistant Everett Fire Marshal Eric Hicks tells MyEverettNews.com that a young man was cooking french fries in hot oil on the stove and left them unattended for a bit too long and flames shot up from the pan. The young man took the pan off the top of the stove and carried the pan outside into the back yard. He was treated for very minor injuries at the scene. As the pan was moved, the fire spread from the stove top to the cabinets and started to extend to the upper area of the kitchen but was stopped by firefighters. Hicks tells MyEverettNews.com kitchen fires are the most common type of fire response for his department. He also offered some tips if you have a fire on your stove.

  • Never use water to try to put out a kitchen fire. You should have a small fire extinguisher handy.
  • If the pan is on fire, put a lid over it. Do not try to take the pan off the stove and carry it out of the house.
  • If you’re actively frying, grilling or broiling, don’t leave the kitchen unattended. It only takes a minute for a flare up.
  • Here’s a great link to more information about preventing kitchen fires.
