Rotten egg smell Everett

Turns out gear oil smells a lot like rotten eggs or natural gas leaking.

The Everett Fire Department responded to more than a dozen reports of a rotten egg smell similar to natural gas Tuesday morning over downtown and north Everett. Reports ranged from 41st and Broadway and north to 10th and Colby. Fire alarms were pulled at several buildings and people evacuated only to find there was no leak in their building. So what was the issue? MyEverettNews.com spoke to the driver of a truck hauling a piece of concrete cutting equipment who traveled down Broadway, Hewitt and California. As the truck traveled, gear oil was leaking from the equipment. Turns out gear oil smells a lot like rotten eggs. The truck stopped in the 2700 block of California just a couple of blocks east of the PUD building. Crews were able to quickly contain the spill and there didn’t appear to be any environmental damage. The driver asked not to be identified and we are respecting his request.
