City of Everett Communication Director Meghan Pembroke and Cultural Arts Manager Carol Thomas tonight revealed to the Everett City Council the city’s new logo. Here were some of the terms used to describe the new logo during their presentation… Creative, artistic but businesslike, not a tourism logo but designed to represent Everett as a municipal corporation, distinctive, movement, symbolic…not literal, simple, bold, modern, clean, “the edge”.
We first told you about the city having a contest for a new logo back in August. The winning logo was one of more than 850 submitted from people around the world. Once the deadline for submissions passed, the public was then asked to vote on their favorite. 5693 votes were cast. The choices were then whittled down to the top 15 with a panel of city employees and community volunteers selecting the winner.
The winning artist is Sean Hamilton of Seattle. He’s picking up a check from the city for $5000.00. Hamilton’s done graphic design work on campaigns for Microsoft, Oh Boy Oberto, Darigold and the Seattle Seahawks to name a few. You can see more of his work here.
Pembroke told the council that the roll out of the logo will be gradual, starting with the city’s re-designed website which will debut next March. It will then appear on paper products like stationary, business cards, etc before finally being added to vehicles and uniforms as they go through their regular replacement cycle.City Councilmember Ron Gipson expressed concern that the city has a new logo but no branding statement or other positioning. He says at a recent city conference he learned that it may be a mistake to change a logo without full branding along with it. Pembroke advised that the logo has built in flexibility that lends itself to adding a branding element at a later time.
