It’s again time for the city to recognize artists in Everett.

The City of Everett is set to again recognize artists and their contributions to Everett. Meghan Pembroke from the city provides the details…

The Everett Cultural Arts Commission has announced the 2014 recipients of the Mayor’s Arts Awards and the Richard Wendt Award of Excellence.

Mayor Ray Stephanson will honor the award recipients during a public celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center at Xfinity Arena, 2000 Hewitt Avenue. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the program begins at 5:30 p.m. The community is encouraged to attend the free celebration.

In recognition of Everett’s growing arts scene, the Cultural Arts Commission created the Mayor’s Arts Awards in 2010 to honor art educators, artists in the community and young artists who demonstrate commitment to the Everett arts community.

This is the 22nd year of the Richard Wendt Award of Excellence and the 40th anniversary of the 1% for the Arts Fund.

The Richard Wendt Award of Excellence is given annually to a person, or organization, who has demonstrated outstanding support of the arts throughout their lifetime. The award is named for Dr. Richard Wendt, who passed away in 2007. Wendt was a long-time promoter of the arts in Everett and helped found the city’s Cultural Arts Commission and the 1% for the Arts program.

The 1% for the Arts Fund was established in Everett in 1974 – one of the first cities in the United States to adopt a percent-for-art ordinance. The program specifies that 1 percent of eligible city capital improvement project funds be set aside for the commission, purchase and installation of artwork.

The 2014 recipients, organizations and individuals that have been selected for impacting the arts community in Everett, include:

  • Kati Nickerson, for Arts Educator
  • Stan Price, for Artist in the Community
  • Fauna Shade, for Emerging Artist
  • Everett Film Festival, for Organization Making a Difference in the Arts
