Would you like to have a say in what 6th – 12th graders are studying?

The Everett School District is looking for parents to help select social studies textbooks for use beginning next year. If you’re interested, here are the requirements per Everett Schools…

Parents, help select new social studies curriculum materials

New classroom materials will be used by next year’s sixth- through twelfth-graders

The district’s social studies selection team, which will include two parents, will spend this year reviewing social studies books and learning materials. The team’s work will result in a recommendation the team will present to the school board. The board, considering the advice and recommendation of the team, will then approve the materials that middle and high school students will use starting in the fall 2015.

One of the parents or guardians on the team will be of a high school student, and one will be of a middle school student.

Selection team responsibilities:

  1. Evaluate social studies curriculum materials
  2. Recommend what curriculum materials the school board could consider approving
  3. Attend and participate in all of the team meetings, scheduled for full days on:
  • October 27 and 28
  • November 24 and 25
  • December 17
  • January 6 and 29
  • February 19
  • March 16
  1. Attend two after school meetings scheduled for March 17 and 18
  2. Be aware that other meetings might be needed in the process. Therefore, each team member must be flexible as we work together through this important process.

How to apply to be a team member:

Email Georgia Lindquist, Humanities and Literacy Specialist, by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2014 with the following information:

  1. Your name, address, preferred email address and phone number
  2. Names of school(s) a child or children in your family attend
  3. Grade(s) of your child or children
  4. A statement of your availability to attend the meetings listed above and your willingness to attend others as needed
  5. A response to the question, “What motivates you to give your time and talents to helping the school board make a decision about classroom materials for secondary social studies students?”
  6. A response to the question, “What is your experience with social studies education?”

How other parents will be involved:

All district parents and the community will be invited to learn about and comment upon curriculum materials during open houses in January or February 2015. More information will be available about those meetings later this fall.

If you have any questions, please email Georgia Lindquist or call 425-385-4064.
