Everett Elementary Principal Tapped For National Advisory Board

Elizabeth Nunes, principal at Jefferson Elementary School in Everett has been named to a national advisory board that helps teachers and administrators improve literacy and involve parents in schools. Here are the details as provided by Mary Waggoner at Everett Public Schools…

In September, Elizabeth Nunes, principal of Jefferson Elementary School, began a two-year appointed term as a member of the Scholastic Book Fairs National Principals Advisory Board.

Nunes is one of 16 principals from public, private, and parochial schools across the country serving on the board. The board helps Scholastic in its work to support teachers and administrators improve literacy and involve parents in schools.

“In our joint quest to promote higher school standards, we depend on principals to help find new ways to improve reading proficiency and introduce more children to the joy of reading great books,” said Alan Boyko, president of Scholastic Book Fairs. “We’re delighted to have Elizabeth on our advisory team. She is widely respected inside and outside the classroom, and we know that her enthusiasm and commitment to literacy and learning will help us turn more kids into avid, life-long readers.”

The board’s focus is to improve literacy, boost student achievement and encourage parents to be involved in student learning. To achieve these goals, the board members gather once a year. They also use technology to connect each quarter to share what works best to reach those goals. Their insights and work in schools help Scholastic Book Fairs promote independent reading, a critical skill students need to meet today’s rigorous Common Core State Standards.

Everett Public Schools Superintendent Gary Cohn congratulated Nunes on her appointment. “It is affirming to have entities outside our district recognize the skills and dedication of our district staff. I know Elizabeth will bring creativity, energy and insights to this group who will learn much from her about best practices at Jefferson and in this district. And I know too that she will eagerly share with us the things she learns by working with other stellar principals from around the country.”

Elizabeth Nunes has devoted 33 years as an educator and has been Jefferson Elementary’s principal for three years. She is a member of the ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) and the Association of Washington School Principals and is the recipient of a Washington State PTA Outstanding Educator Award. Jefferson Elementary has earned a Washington Achievement Award for Closing the Achievement Gap and Excellence in Science.
