Thousands of anglers, friends and family are expected on the Everett waterfront this Saturday and Sunday for the annual Everett Coho Derby. Top prize this year is $10,000.00 with $5,000.00 going to second place. Hundreds of other prizes are available to the nearly 2000 participants who purchase a ticket. So with all those tickets purchased where do the funds from the derby go? According to the Coho Derby website, the Everett Steelhead & Salmon Club and the Snohomish Sportsmen’s Club form an equal partnership to run the derby and also to divide the proceeds. They use the funds to support community events and conservation projects including two major coho enhancement operations (a net pen on the Everett waterfront and an active hatchery), which place over 80,000 catchable fish each year into the water. There are also special fishing events for kids as well as educational programs for all ages. Even if you’re not going to enter the derby, the scene on the Everett waterfront makes for great people watching and fun photo opportunities. There’s also a beer garden and lots to eat.
