The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club recently launched an online crowdfunding campaign to raise money for local non-profit Hand in Hand. Approximately $800 of the $5,000 goal has been raised to date, with a little over a week still to give. The funds generated by the club will be matched dollar-for-dollar at their annual auction on March 22, 2014 at the Tulalip Resort Casino.
Hand in Hand is an Everett-based non-profit that provides a safe place for children that have been taken from their homes due to neglect, crime or abuse. On any given day there are more than 10,000 children within the Washington foster care system. Usually, these children are forcibly removed from their homes, given a garbage bag to hold their belongings, and are often separated from siblings. Hand in Hand Executive Director Todd McNeal says he created the organization “to provide a place where kids could be fed, clothed, cleaned, and most importantly, loved. A place that provided the needed time to find the right foster home the first time, so that children did not have to move from family to family.”
The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club has chosen Hand in Hand as it’s Fund-A-Need for their annual auction. Auction Chair Jim Stephanson would like to see $40,000 dollars or more raised on the night of the event. He adds, “the dollars raised will help give foster children a safe place over their heads during a frightening time in their lives. Our club is honored to partner with Hand in Hand to help support and expand their services.”
Funds generated online by the crowdfunding campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the donations made the night of the auction. This unique funding model was the brainchild of the club’s PR Chair, Sean Straub. “Not everyone can make it to the auction, and we were also interested in how to connect with younger, savvier philanthropists that may want to support a good cause online,” Straub said. He also explained, “If we’re able to raise a few thousand dollars before the auction, we can come in to the event with good momentum. We’ll use that
momentum during the Fund-A-Need to get people at the event inspired to give more. And at the end of the day, if we’re successful, we’ll be able to provide more beds, toys and supplies to foster children in our community.”
Online donations can be made until March 21, 2014 at http://bit.ly/supportSafePlace. For more
