A 17 year veteran of the Everett Police Department is one of four law enforcement officers who were involved in a chase and shooting that ended at the intersection of 53rd Ave. West and 88th Street SW in Mukilteo Sunday afternoon. Here’s the first press release from the Snohomish Multi Agency Response Team (S.M.A.R.T.) that investigates officer involved shootings in our area.

A 34 year-old man suspected of shooting two Camano Island residents was shot by police in Mukilteo this afternoon following a pursuit that began near Stanwood. The shooting occurred at the intersection of 88th St SW and 53rd Ave W where the road is currently closed for the investigation.

The incident began earlier today around 3:30 p.m. when Island County Sheriff’s Office detectives called the Stanwood Police Department asking for assistance looking for a suspect vehicle. Detectives believed that the suspect had shot two people at the 500 block of Michelle Dr on Camano Island and fled the scene. A trooper with Washington State Patrol located the suspect vehicle on Hwy 532 and initiated pursuit, which was soon joined by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect continued to I-5, traveling southbound at speeds up to 100 mph, before exiting the freeway at Hwy 526. At that point, units from Everett Police Department joined the pursuit. The suspect’s vehicle went off the road at the 5300 block of 88th St SW.

Detectives are still interviewing witnesses and officers to learned what happened at that point, but it has been confirmed that shots were fired, hitting the suspect. The suspect was transported to Harborview Medical Center.

The shooting victims from Camano Island were one 44 year-old male and one adult female, age unknown. The male victim remains in critical condition at the hospital.

One police officer, one state trooper and two deputies were involved in the shooting. The officer from Everett Police Department has been with agency for 17 years. The state trooper has been with Washington State Patrol for two and half years. One deputy has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 21 years and the second for 16 years. All involved officers and deputies have been placed on administrative leave by their respective agencies, as is standard procedure.
