The Gateway Lego Guardians…

On Saturday, Jan. 18, Gateway Middle School’s robotics team placed sixth in the FIRST Lego League competition. As a result, they are advancing to the state semi-finals, Sunday, Feb. 9 at Henry M. Jackson High School, hosted by Jackson’s own Jack in the Bot robotics team.

Teams demonstrated their skills before the judges in three categories; mechanical design, project presentation, and core values. In those categories, judges determined whether they were; beginning, developing, accomplished, or exemplary. Out of nine sub-categories, the Guardians were considered accomplished in seven and exemplary in the other two.

“What an exciting and tense moment waiting for our team number to be called for that coveted spot in the state semi-finals,” said Coach Brick Baldwin. “Winning this spot means the team performed at a very consistent level through all the judging and competition.

“Only 12 teams out of the 45 that competed today received this advancement,” added Robotics Advisor Tom Viloria. “Gateway Pride!”
