Last Monday, hundreds of teens across Snohomish County honored Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) and his work with a day of service. In Everett, students from Everett and Jackson High Schools spent the afternoon leading crafts, games and activities at Full Life Care, a nonprofit serving adults with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Earlier that day, teens from Jackson High School’s girls basketball team also volunteered at Senior Services, cleaning and assisting with technology coaching for seniors and special projects around the center.
Billed as a “Day On” as opposed to a “Day Off,” the MLK Day of Service on Jan. 20 featured 20 service projects throughout Snohomish County, including locations in Edmonds, Everett, Lynnwood, Marysville, Monroe, Mountlake Terrace, Snohomish, Stanwood and Sultan. With over 300 youth and 58 adult volunteers, the fifth annual MLK Day of Service in Snohomish County saw a 20% participation increase compared to last year.
“This annual day of service is a partnership between United Way, YMCA of Snohomish County, Catholic Community Services and Senior Corps-RSVP,” said Dennis G. Smith, president and CEO of United Way of Snohomish County. “We look forward to this event every year, and are so pleased with this year’s results.”
Marking its fifth year, the local day of service brings high school students and community volunteers together to serve the most vulnerable members of our community, transforming Dr. King’s life mission and teachings into community service.
