. In what they say is an attempt to become more efficient, avoid duplication and gain an economy of scale, the Everett Police Department has presented the Everett City Council a plan to combine the city of Everett’s SWAT team with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Swat team to form what they call the Region 1 SWAT team. The city of Everett and Snohomish County each have their own SWAT teams but often team up on incidents.

According to the documents presented to the Everett City Council on Tuesday, the initial agreement will be for one year with two five-year extensions. The new SWAT team will be made up of 36 members, 18 from Everett and 18 from SCSO. Additional positions include the Team Commander, (currently the Everett Police SWAT Team Commander) and the Team leader, (currently the Snohomish County Sheriff’s SWAT Team Commander). The Everett Police Chief and Snohomish County Sheriff will approve the budgets for the Team and decide how to split costs among the two agencies. There is also an advisory board made up commanders from Everett Police and SCSO to provide oversight. While the Region 1 SWAT team will start out with just Everett and Snohomish County, other cities may join the team in the future.
