Losses Top $330,000 for Year at Comcast Arena Everett, G.M. Leaving for Tacoma

Bedier and Weikel

Outgoing General Manager Kim Bedier with EPFD Board President Gary Weikel

It was a somber meeting of the Everett Public Facilities District this morning. The EPFD operates Comcast Arena at Everett and today was the last board meeting for General Manager Kim Bedier, who has been hired as Public Assembly Facilities Director for the City of Tacoma. In that capacity she will oversee the Tacoma Dome, Cheney Stadium, the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center and several other venues. Bedier has been the only general manager at Comcast since it opened 10 years ago. Global Spectrum, the company that manages the arena for the PFD, has started the search for a new General Manager. Board President Gary Weikel updated the board on the search for Bedier’s replacement saying that Global is launching an internal and external campaign and that there is at least one local candidate. He said that Global does not expect to have a replacement for Bedier until after the first of the year. He’s asking for full involvement from board members in the selection process but did note that it was Global’s position and their employee.

It’s been a rough year financially for Comcast Arena at Everett and today’s financial report contained more bad news as losses for this year stand at $336,000.00. Revenues are trailing last year by more than $150,000.00. Back in August the Public Facilities District asked about reducing operating expenses by 10 percent. There was a follow-up report on that today from Tom Gaffney, chair of the finance committee, “We are on target for a 10% reduction in expenses but the issue is on the revenue side,” said Gaffney. “We have not had the number of events in 2012 that we need to have.” Gaffney went on to say that there is no issue with meeting current obligations but if things continue at this pace the PFD will struggle with making future bond payments. While the Public Facilities District owns the arena, the bonds are guaranteed by the City of Everett.
