EDITOR’S NOTE: 10/11/12… Just got an update from the City of Everett that the Monte Cristo Awards Ceremony will be re-scheduled for November 15th at a location to be determined.

Monte Cristo Awards ceremony set for ThursdayTime for the annual Monte Cristo Awards. Here’s the lowdown from Kate Reardon at the city of Everett…
Pride of ownership and tender loving care will be honored once again this year at the 18th Annual Monte Cristo awards ceremony Thursday, Oct. 11th. The event begins at 6:30pm with a reception, followed by the presentation of the awards at the Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave. The public is encouraged to attend.

Award recipients are recognized for making the city a special place to live through their extensive efforts to make their homes or businesses attractive and keep them well maintained. Awards are given in three categories: Rejuvenation and Transformation, Pride of the Neighborhood and Neighborhood Friendly Business. Award recipients receive a Monte Cristo Award plaque for placement on the exterior of their home or business. The Awards sponsors are the Everett Council of Neighborhoods and the City of Everett Office of Neighborhoods.

Mayor Ray Stephanson, City Council President Ron Gipson and other city officials will present the awards at a ceremony at the Everett Performing Arts Center.

Everett residents turned in more than 130 nominations this year. A committee of residents, many of whom who serve on the Council of Neighborhoods, made final selections and have assisted with preparations for the awards.

There were tough choices to make, given the dedicated work many neighbors put into their homes’ appearance and upkeep. Landscaping, lawn care, and appearance and upkeep of the house itself are all considered in the selection process.

Each year previous award winners are evaluated for the coveted Marian Krell Award, formerly known as the Director’s Award. Department of Neighborhoods and Community Services Executive Administrator Deborah Wright will present this award, which recognizes superior care given on an ongoing basis by homeowners who previously received a Monte Cristo award.
