Silvertips Lose Sunday Game in 7 Round Sudden Death Shoot Out

Everett SilvertipsThe Everett Silvertips showed their offensive side while building a 6-3 lead on Sunday, but ultimately the Prince George Cougars rallied to a shocking 7-6 shootout victory at Comcast Arena. The ‘Tips earned their first point of the season in the seven-round shootout defeat, but will now be forced to try again for their first win later this week on the road.

Landon Oslanski led the offensive charge for Everett, scoring two goals and adding two assists on his way to the game’s first star. Ryan Murray also tallied a goal and two assists, while Manraj Hayer assisted on three goals in his first game of the year. Josh Winquist scored twice and Tyler Sandhu posted his first WHL points with two assists. Everett scored four powerplay goals on seven opportunities and added a shorthanded tally in the loss, while Prince George was 2 of 9 with the man-advantage.

The Silvertips came out on fire in the first, scoring three times to take a 3-2 lead into the break. The ‘Tips scored their first goal on the powerplay when Landon Oslanki’s shot from the point hit the post before Manraj Hayer put in on the rebound. Daulton Siwak tied it for Prince George on a 5-on-3 as his rebound try squeaked by goaltender Cole Holowenko. A shorthanded goal put the ‘Tips back on top when Cody Fowlie connected with Oslanski during a 2-on-1 rush. Another powerplay goal from Siwak tied it at two for the Cougars before a beautiful passing play from Tyler Sandhu and Manraj Hayer saw Josh Winquist bury the puck to put Everett back on top 3-2.

The scoring continued in the second with the Silvertips finding the back of the net three times. Everett’s powerplay continued to click as a Ryan Murray slapshot from the blue line found its way over the shoulder of goaltender Brett Zarowny. Daniel Gibb scored for the Cougars before the ‘Tips added two more powerplay goals to close out the period. Winquist one-timed a Sandhu cross-ice pass into the net during a two-man advantage and then Oslanski blasted in a long slapshot from the blue line during the remaining powerplay time to give Everett a 6-3 lead heading into the third.

Prince George scored three times in the last 12 minutes of regulation to tie the game back up at six and force overtime followed by a shootout. Alex Forsberg, Mark McNulty and Caleb Belter each scored for the Cougars, who tied the game with exactly three minutes remaining in the third. After a scoreless overtime the teams headed to a shootout.

The clubs traded goals through six shootout rounds, with Hayer, Murray and Sandhu all scoring to give the Silvertips the lead. Prince George answered each time however, and when Oslanski was stopped in round seven, Jordan Tkatch finally posted the winning goal for the visitors.

Cole Holowenko stopped 32 of 38 shots through regulation and overtime in his first start for Everett, while Brett Zarowny turned away 33 of 39 to get the win for Prince George. Both teams finished with 39 shots.
