Everett Silvertips open 10th season tonight

Tonight at 7:05pm the Everett Silvertips begin their 10th season of WHL hockey in Everett, WA.

The ‘Tips will open their 10th season against the Prince George Cougars, the same team they faced in their inaugural home game on October 4, 2003.
Here’s what the Silvertips say you can expect this year…

For the past month, the Silvertips have been practicing, playing exhibition games and tweaking their roster to prepare for the grueling 72-game WHL regular season. Head Coach Mark Ferner enters his second season behind the bench with a team of 25 players including 14 returners and 11 newcomers, nine of which are WHL rookies. Joining Coach Ferner behind the bench are returning Assistant Coaches Chris Hartsburg and Mitch Love.

Captain Ryan Murray leads a re-vamped defense corps consisting of five newcomers, including overager Landon Oslanski and first-round import pick Mirco Mueller. The forward group is highlighted by ten returning players and complemented by five exciting young rookies, three of which are 16-year-olds. Ryan Harrison is the team’s top returning scorer after a 52-point campaign placed him second on the club in 2011-12. Second-year goaltender Austin Lotz is joined in net by veteran Cole Holowenko, who was acquired just this week in a trade from Prince Albert.

Everett finished last season strong, rallying from last place in the standings after a difficult first half to post a record over .500 in the last two months of the regular season. That surge helped the ‘Tips clinch a ninth-consecutive appearance in the WHL playoffs, making them one of just a few teams to do so. Although they were defeated by top-seeded Tri-City in the first round of the playoffs, the youthful Silvertips are hoping the stage is set for a breakout season and a return to prominence in the league standings.
