No smoking anywhere on campus at Everett Community College

As school starts next week, a reminder that smokers need to take their butts off the EvCC campus

Just in time for the start of the school year next Monday, Everett Community College has received the Snohomish Health District Healthy Workplace Award for going beyond the minimum required to protect people from second-hand smoke. According to a press release from the Snohomish Health District, Everett Community College prohibits smoking not only on its main campus but also at the College Place Shopping Center across Broadway from the main campus. There are now no dedicated smoking areas on the EvCC campus.

“Everett Community College is taking very seriously the health of its employees and students by addressing smoking, the leading underlying cause of death in Snohomish County and in the U.S.,” said Dr. Gary Goldbaum, Health Officer and Director of Snohomish Health District. “Local public health recognizes and appreciates the commitment that the Trustees have made to creating a safe and healthy workplace.”

On July 17th, the Everett Community College Board of Trustees unanimously voted to prohibit tobacco use on college property. Since then they’ve held numerous public meetings to help educate students, faculty, staff and neighbors about the policy, and will continue to offer tobacco cessation programs to students and employees as part of this initiative.
