51 Tickets in 2 Hours During Friday’s Speed Emphasis on I-5 in Everett

WSP averaged one ticket every 2.5 minutes during last Friday’s emphasis at 41st street and I-5 in Everett

Washington State Patrol public information Trooper Keith Leary provided me with an update this afternoon on the big speed emphasis thru Everett last Friday afternoon. Leary says troopers wrote 51 tickets in a 2 hour period while working just the area of the 41st street overpass at I-5. “We weren’t stopping cars for 5 or 6 over the limit, the people we were stopping were going 15 – 25 miles an hour higher than the 60 mile per hour limit,” said Leary. He said in the short time he was there he stopped one motorist at 81 miles an hour. Leary says the point is to get people to think about their speed when they approach an area and they remember the large number of troopers and make sure they’re following the speed limit. He says troopers have identified I-5 between 128th street and the Snohomish River as a spot with too many accidents and that it’s become a POPS project which stands for Problem Oriented Public Safety. “We want to reduce crashes in that area,” said Leary. “We will be back.”
