Snohomish County Search and Rescue

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office today identified the man who died on Saturday while hiking with his brother near Merchant Peak east of Index, as 30-year-old Randall Alan Stupey. According to Shari Ireton of the Sheriff’s office, Stupey was hiking with his brother when the two became separated. The brother called 9-1-1 after he lost voice contact with Stupey who didn’t show at their rendezvous point. Searchers located the deceased in an area that is described as steep, treacherous terrain, down a narrow slot “chimney”. Because of the terrain it took search and rescue crews two days to safely recover Stupey.
