Drew Nielsen will be remembered tonight at Everett's city council meeting

The Everett City Council has postponed several items on tonight’s agenda. This evening will be the first city council meeting since the death of councilman Drew Nielsen in a rafting accident this past weekend and there will likely be many emotional tributes. Among the items postponed are the Mayor’s Youth Achievement Awards as well as briefings on transit agreements and votes on advertising contracts.

One thing the Everett City Council will have to act upon quickly is the appointment of someone to fill Nielsen’s seat. There are three years left on his term after he won re-election last fall.  Due to the timing of his passing, whoever they appoint to fill his position will have to run for election on the general election ballot this November. The winner will then fill out the remaining 3 years of the term. Of course the chance to run for election to that seat is open to anyone who wishes to pay the $262.79 filing fee and put their name up for consideration by Everett voters. The rub is that you only have until 5:00pm this Friday to make the decision to run. Tonight’s Everett City Council meeting gets underway at 6:30pm at the City Council Chambers at 3002 Wetmore in downtown Everett.
