Winds Creating Minor Havoc in Everett

January 2, 2012

Everett

Nothing major yet but winds have caused a cable to come off the downtown Everett Christmas tree, power outages in various parts of Everett and wind gusts of 50 mph have been recorded at Paine Field. One of the larger power outages so far has been in central Everett along Evergreen Way between 52nd to the north and 59th to the south, Colby to the east and College Avenue to the west. Other outages have been recorded in the Pinehurst neighborhood and scattered around Everett. As far as the Christmas tree, a cable dropped down into the middle of the intersection of Colby and Hewitt and began swinging thru the intersection. The tree remained secure but the cable could have caused some serious damage to cars and pedestrians. Everett police called out public works crew members who came out and first secured the swinging cable to a barricade in the middle of the intersection. Then, one of the crew took the cable up in the bucket truck and re-secured it back to the framework around the intersection. All the while the wind was gusting, the tree was swaying but the Everett public works crew did the job quickly, safely and prevented damage to people and property.
