Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson will outline possible budget cuts tonight

It should be an interesting meeting of the Everett City Council tonight as the council must take action on a proposed 1% increase in the property tax for 2012. The proposed increase was included in Mayor Ray Stephanson’s balanced budget presentation to the city council. Last week the Everett City Council failed for the first time in nine years to automatically approve the 1% increase asked for by the Mayor and needed to balance the budget.

Tonight Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson will reveal what he plans to cut in order to make up a 300 thousand dollar deficit if the property tax increase is not approved. No word yet on what those cuts will consist of but the council will have to digest the information quickly and make a decision tonight as the city is obligated to provide the assessor with the tax information for 2012 by the end of this month. Since it takes two weeks for an ordinance once approved, to go into effect, action must be taken this evening. The public hearing on the tax increase has already been held so the discussion will now be between just the Mayor and City Council. The meeting starts at 6:30pm in the Everett City Council Chambers and will be televised live on Everett TV in Comcast and Frontier cable households.
