Candidate Profiles – Mark Wolken Everett Port Commissioner District 2

October 19, 2011

Everett, Everett Government

Mark Wolken is running for Port of Everett Commission Position 2

I was elected to fill a vacancy on the Port Commission in 2009. For more nearly 30 years I’ve served on public and private boards to do my part to make our community a better place to live and work. Serving as a Port Commissioner is a continuation of that same public service. The mission given to Ports by the state is economic development. I believe my experience as Economic Development Director for Everett, as an Executive with a large business, and as a business owner (combined with the board experience) gives me the tools to help the Port carry out its mission to create jobs.

I’ve drawn on my experience -municipal services, job development, transportation, and industrial, commercial and residential development to provide strong guidance in these challenging economic times. I’ve worked with the other Commissioners and staff to develop and implement strategic planning that will better measure our progress, sustainability and create more accountability for what we do.

Virtually every area the Port has a business interest we also have to clean up the toxic legacies from the old ways of doing things. I have first-hand experience with these complex tasks to ensure the work is done right while minimizing costs to our constituents. I’ve also led efforts that increase our ability to manage complex these environmental projects to ensure they are done right while controlling costs.

The Port provides efficient transport of aerospace and other cargo that keeps people in our community working. I’ve used my experience in transportation and shipping to help our efforts to create more shipping activity that maintains and expands local jobs.
