Everett, Everett Government

Cindy Portmann is running for Snohomish County Assessor

Cindy Portmann’s reply to My Everett News Question:

“Why should people living in Everett vote for me?”

It has been an honor to serve as your Assessor and I want you to know that I take my job and your accurate assessment seriously.

I’ve been endorsed by The Everett Herald, the Snohomish Camano Association of REALTORS, Mayor Ray Stephenson and many current and former elected officials, organizations and citizens. For more information please visit: www.votecindy.com

Under my leadership:

• The percentage of homeowners filing appeals of their assessments is less than 270 this year.
• Last year the 800+ residential appeals were nearly all answered within 3 months. But, the Board of Equalization may take 12 to 18 months to schedule a hearing.
• Implementing annual revaluations my first year in office improved the fairness of assessments.
• Professional mass appraisal performance standards have been met and exceeded each year.
• We have a reputation for providing professional and courteous customer service and for being prompt in responding to applications for exemptions.

We’ve accomplished this in spite of the wild real estate market over the past 8 years and improved customer service in the face of severe budget cuts. We have one of the highest workloads per employee in the state, but still strive to improve our quality and quantity each year.

The duties of the assessor are mandated by State law:
• The assessed value as of Jan.1st 2011 using sales that occurred in 2010 will be used to calculate taxes owing in 2012, according to state law.
• The real estate market is still declining so assessed values are naturally going to be higher in a declining market after the assessment date.
• Your assessed value determines your share of taxes to be collected
• Taxing district budgets and voter approved measures determine how much you pay

Thank You!
