Mail Stolen From Main Everett Post Office Collection Box

September 7, 2011

Everett, Police Blotter

If you mailed any checks between Saturday afternoon and early Tuesday morning, double-check your statement

I found this notice taped to the outside of the mail collection box in the driveway of the downtown Everett Post Office on Hoyt. It seems someone was able to steal some amount of mail over the Labor Day holiday weekend. While the notice says it happened between Monday at 3pm and Tuesday at 3am I spoke with A.J. Winsor, a Postal Inspector, who told me they are looking into the time period from Saturday afternoon September 3rd, thru Tuesday September 6th. Winsor says anyone who mailed checks thru that box between Saturday and Tuesday should check with their bank to make sure that the check they wrote was not processed with a different amount or made out to a different payee. He says thefts from these large drop boxes right in front of post offices are rare but they do happen. If you think you may have been a victim you can contact the postal inspector’s office online or by calling 1 (877) 876-2455. It is not know how much mail was stolen and Winsor says the case is an ongoing investigation.
