Everett’s finest just got Everett’s finest…those were the words of former Everett City Council member Connie Niva this afternoon during a ceremony to formally recognize Kathy Atwood as Everett Police Chief.  Niva pinned a patrol officer badge on Atwood back in 1989 marking her hiring as an Everett Police Officer. Niva told the crowd of friends and family gathered for the ceremony, that even back then she knew someday Atwood would become chief. Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson talked about how Atwood grew up in Everett, worked her way up the ranks and understands the community of Everett from all sides. He cited her character, honesty and integrity and said he knows she has the trust and respect of the officers she will oversee. Stephanson also said he was committed to promoting from within the police and all other city departments.

When it was her turn at the microphone, Atwood said she’s looking at the job as someone who’s building a new house or in this case a remodel. She cited five “pillars” on which she intends to build the Everett Police Department. Good People. Good policy. Good Training. Good Supervision and Good Discipline. Atwood went on to say that beginning in August the Everett Police Department will be refining its mission and vision through a 5 year strategic plan.

Atwood was born and raised in Everett, WA. She attended Everett High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from PLU and a master’s degree from Seattle University. She’s held a variety of assignments in the Everett Police Department including operations, investigations and administrative services. She was named to succeed Everett Police Chief Jim Scharf back in March and took over most of the active duties as police chief a couple of weeks ago. Now though, she has the badge, duties and the full responsibilities as the latest Police Chief for the city of Everett, WA.
