Governor to sign "WSU in Everett" legislation tomorrow

Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson told the Everett City Council tonight that Governor Christine Gregoire is set to sign legislation tomorrow that would have Washington State University establish a branch campus in Everett and take over the University Center Program currently being administered by Everett Community College within three years. Here’s the text of the bill she’s expected to sign sometime between 1:30 and 3:30pm at her office in Olympia. Fighting between Marysville and Everett killed a plan to have the University of Washington set up shop in Snohomish County so Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson pursued the idea with WSU President Elson S. Floyd who embraced the opportunity. There’s still a lot to do including setting up a coordinating and planning council to be responsible for long-range and strategic planning, inter-institutional collaboration, collaboration with the community served, and dispute resolution for the center. The bottom line is that Everett and Snohomish County are one stop closer to hosting a major 4 year University.
